Thomas Ustick: b. Aug. 30, 1753, New York, N.Y.; d. Apr. 18, 1803, Burlington, N.J.; baptized at age 13 by John Gano (q.v.), Gold Street/First Baptist meetinghouse, N.Y., December 20, 1766; attended James Manning’s Academy, Warren, R.I.; grad. Rhode Island College (later Brown Univ.), Sept. 7, 1771 (earned A.M., 1774); m. Hannah Whittier (1750/1, Fairfield, Ct.-Mar. 10, 1837), 1772; taught school in New York while pursuing theological studies for the ministry, 1772-1775; lic. 1774, First Baptist, New York, N.Y.; supply pastor, Stamford, Ct., 1775-1776, pastor, Ashford, Ct., 1776 (ord. Aug. 5, 1777)-1779, Grafton, Mass., 1779-1781, supply pastor, First Baptist, Phila., Pa., Jan.-Aug. 1782, pastor, First Baptist, Phila., Aug. 5, 1782-1802. His gravesite is in the Mount Moriah Cemetery, Phila., though the original gravestone for he and his wife Hannah is preserved inside the First Baptist Church, Philadelphia. “His naturally quiet and sensitive spirit was so well regulated by humility and prudence, that it commended his piety, and won all hearts to his conciliatory and Christ-like deportment”—Gillette.
