Jonathan Going was one of the prime movers of Baptist congregational, denominational, organizational, and educational formation in the early nineteenth century. His vision for ministry and mission, his concern for the development of Baptist-related educational institutions, and his tireless efforts in solidifying those fledgling endeavors shaped the Baptist presence in America irrevocably. His engagement in the broader, if less formal, Protestant community reflected the “truly liberal spirit” of Christian cooperation in the new American nation. --Bill Leonard
