"Spiritual meaning or sense of the Scripture:"

27th Jan 2021

The next section of our latest book - The Works and Letters of Cleve Brantley - is a collection of some of the letters written to Bro. Gary Long. In the next few weeks, we'll look at some of those. Today here's an excerpt from the one we've entitled, "Spiritual meaning or sense of the Scripture:"

Words have no other purpose than to express thought or meaning. In reading the Bible, we must search for the meaning and not stick in the letter. Our rule is 1 Cor. 2:13. Cf. 2 Cor. 3. The Holy Spirit is the author of Bible words. He alone knows their meaning. We cannot allow human lexicographers to define Bible words; we must let the Bible define its own words. The letters which make up the Word are important only to its pronunciation or sound; it has nothing to do with the meaning of the word. The Bible is a spiritual book. Therefore we must look for the spiritual meaning. . . . . Do you realize that our language has deteriorated to such an extent that we can hardly communicate even with those who speak the same language? Alas, man corrupts everything he touches. We get farther from the meaning of the Bible every day. The whole tendency today is toward the letter and away from the meaning.
