Richard Vaughn excerpt from the Ministers of the PBA

Richard Vaughn: b. 1790, Blanford Co., Va.; d. Dec. 31, 1871, Newport, R.I.; born into slavery on the Peechy estate, Mrs. Peechy arranged in her will for him to obtain his freedom “when he should become of age,” while Christ arranged both that and his freedom from the bondage of sin before the world began; “accordingly at the age of 21 years he became free” (Jeter); m. Agnes Hopes, of Yorktown, Va.; ord. Abyssinian Baptist, New York, N.Y., 1829; ord. pastor, First African Baptist, Phila., 1846-1857, settled at Newport, R.I., where in his latter years he “often preached and administered the Lord’s Supper” at Shiloh (Colored) Baptist, Newport, R.I., ca. 1867-1868, “previous to the church securing its third pastor” (Jeter). His gravesite is in the cemetery of the Second Baptist Church, Newport, Rhode Island. “Father Vaughn was greatly respected by both white and colored. When Rev. C. H. Malcom, D.D. [q.v.], was ordained to the gospel ministry in Philadelphia, Father Vaughn assisted in the ceremonies”—Jeter.
