“Though he was not a man of natural elocution, nor ever took pains to form himself for a public speaker; yet such was his knowledge of the Scriptures, his acquaintance with the deep things of God, his observations upon mankind and what passed within himself, that his discourses being well studied, came with warmth from the heart, and were delivered with an unction, that did not fail, through the course of a long life, to recommend them to the approbation of a judicious auditory.” So wrote an early biographer of the pastor-historian Joshua Thomas, in characterizing his long, conscientious, self-denying ministry at Leominster. --Kennedy Hart
