Samuel Boykin’s History of the Baptist Denomination in Georgia described Callaway as “a man of very strong and decided convictions” who “was not given to compromises when he thought that principle was involved; was inflexible, stern, and sometimes was thought to be a little over-bearing, but considering his remarkable force of character, this is not surprising.” A similar observation is contained in William Cathcart’s Baptist Encyclopedia, noting that Callaway “possessed a strong will, indomitable perseverance, and unflinching integrity, and to the day of his death maintained an unblemished reputation." --Anthony Chute
