One of the apparent ironies of Baptist life in the United States during the nineteenth century is that many Baptists, while advocating for the separation of church and state, themselves served in state legislatures. One of these was Horatio Gates Jones, Jr., son of Horatio Gates Jones (1777-1853), the founder (1808) and for 45 years pastor of the Lower Merion Baptist Church. Although not a minister like his father, the younger Jones distinguished himself in many spheres of academic and political influence. He was an accomplished historian, who served as the president of the Historical Society of Pennsylvania and held membership in several other such societies. However, Jones rendered his most conspicuous service to Pennsylvania as one of the more forceful voices for religious liberty in the state Senate, as evidenced in his proposal of the religious liberty bill in that body. --André Gazal
