A native of Vermont, C. D. Mallary left for South Carolina as a young man and eventually ended up in neighboring Georgia, where B. D. Ragsdale says that by “his prudent counsel and gentle spirit he helped in a large way to develop and shape the life and institutions of Georgia Baptists.” Mallary was known for both his preaching and his piety. He also garnered a reputation as a writer of biographies on notable Georgia Baptists Edmund Botsford and Jesse Mercer, as well as doctrinal and devotional works, including a series of books for children under the penname “Uncle Charles.”
